Drawing course (Part 2)

Drawing in Colour.
I've now enrolled in this second part of the course. So I'm busy updating my profile on the OCA website and reading through the instructions for the course. I use a program called Evernote to keep notes on my computers and as these can be published online much like a blog I'm trying this as a way of keeping my learning journal. There's not much there yet but you're welcome to look.

Its now spring 2009 and I started this course in autumn 2007. I had intended to complete earlier but other commitments precluded this. I feel I have learned much about the use of different mediums and their associated tools. I'm pleased with some of the work I have produced (particularly the outdoor study) but less satisfied with my figure studies which is an area I shall address further in the coming weeks.

I intend to enrol on the second module of this course (Drawing in Colour) shortly.

The final part of this project was to draw a seated figure using whichever mediums I wished. I used pencil, charcoal and pen & ink.

Part 3 comprises four longer (2 hour) poses.

Pose 1. Foreshortened view of forearms and thighs.

Pose 2. Resting model. Again to demonstrate foreshortening.

Pose 3. Three-quarter front view including bare feet.

Pose 4. This pose to use tonal values and show surrounding area.

This section started with me drawing matchstick figures in numerous poses. This was followed by these four standing poses each of which was to take about 15 minutes. I'm fairly pleased with the proportions and angles but not with the representation of the model's face.

Drawing a seated figure. I feel the proportions are wrong but the general demeanour is OK. Its not a particularly good likeness of my model either.

Of the four possibles (Drawing the Figure; Drawing and Photography: Plans and Elevations or Drawing with Collage) I chose drawing the Figure. I felt this would be hard for me but would be of greatest benefit to my artistic development.

Cubist space. The instruction was to combine several views of a familiar object in the same drawing. Since the weather was hot I went outside and drew the bird table on the lawn. Not sure if I quite got this right or if the views should have intersected..

Aerial perspective. the aim is to introduce depth using tones. The view is looking north over Edinburgh to the Firth of Forth from the roof of the Museum. A2 size.

Here I had to draw the view through a doorway inside a building then superimpose the vanishing point lines to check how accurate my eye was.

The remit for this one was an urban landscape. The main point was to use buildings wo that most lines would be straightforward. A2 size. Pencil. pen and charcoal.

9 Feb 08. (I was away from home for the latter part of December and most of January.) This is an A2 size pen-and-ink drawing. The remit was to select items from the kitchen and arrange them on a table. Then produce several practice sketches before committing to the A2 version. The reason for using ink was so that errors cannot be erased.

18 Nov. I practised a few more times with charcoal and with pen-and-ink.
Finally I did this one using both mediums. Its about 8"x6" and, as ever, looks a bit softer than the compressed photo can show.

Having finished the first two chapters the drawings below plus some others have been sent to my tutor for comment.

Since posting the drawings here I've spotted some mistakes. Its interesting how seeing them on the screen shows up things I hadn't noticed before.

By the way the white marks on the drawings are where I've used Tippex correcting fluid. (The student's instructions sometimes allow this.)

Saw my easel at an angle and it looked like something was wrong. It was just the perspective foreshortening the painting. Did this sketch and now spot that the vanishing points for the painting and the easel legs don't match in the RH image. Never mind, lesson noted.
